About Teresa Stallings
Some see making photos in or of nature's beauty as a disconnect from that nature. An attempt to grab a piece of it instead of relishing in the beauty and awesomeness of it. This is so far removed from how I experience it that I'd never even entertained this idea. Even knowing this it is difficult for me to fathom.
Since I was a very young child I've felt a very strong connection with nature and the infinite. I could sit for hours in a field or among the trees and relish in their power and beauty. Sometimes I'd read and other times just being still. The butterflies especially, but not solely were drawn to me. Not of my own yearning, in fact, it often took me by surprise. It still does. Maybe because of these practices I became very attuned and aware of nature or possibly vice versa. Who can say really?
There may have been a time or even sometimes now that I make photographs in nature in an attempt to hold on to the moment, as is the case with photographing people. We do this so we can remember the moment and that does play into nature photography too but, more than that and always at least in addition to, I want to impart the beauty and magic I find in it to others.
When I received my very first camera at around 8 years old, a brownie box camera passed down to me from my grandmother, I felt right away a very strong connection with this art form. I was enthralled by it and my newfound ability to show people the world through my eyes. I finally had a tool to help explain what I saw.
It is also a sort of meditation for me. Wherever I find beauty in nature and well, that's not hard to do, and I take out my camera and begin making photos of that beauty, I'm transported to another realm. The weather might be unbearable at any other time but, while I'm behind the lens I only feel the power and energy, and beauty flowing through my medium to me. I don't feel the cold or the heat or even the rain, unfortunately for my camera, particularly with the latter. I've actually killed at least one camera because of this. I now try to be a bit more cognizant of the rain at least.
I truly believe the statement attributed to Albert Einstein, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is". I obviously don't need to state in which way I live mine. I use the words miracles and magic interchangeably in case anyone gets confused by this. I see them as synonyms.
As is with my travel photography, all the above is true plus there's the added bonus that I get to share these magnificent places and this awesome journey I'm on with people that sometimes cannot for whatever reason travel to these places.
